這是一個很好的問題，看完已有的回答後，感到目前許多英語學習者在一些「小的語法點」上仍需夯實。

這個問題的本質，實際上並不是小學英語語法中的「mine＝my＋名詞」，而是一種特殊的語法，即『雙重所有格』。

什麼是『雙重所有格』？

雙重所有格(double genitive)的構成形式是：

「of+名詞所有格或者名詞性物主代詞」

看到這裡你也許會有疑問，為什麼不是形容詞性物主代詞(my)呢？

原因很簡單，當讓你翻譯「我的朋友」時，你最先給出的答案多半是「my friend」。

而事實上，my friend＝a friend of mine.

前者的本質是s所有格，而後者是of所有格（形式下的雙重所有格）。

英語裏的所有格，只有這兩種。若非要說存在第三種，那就是之前提到的雙重所有格了。

雙重所有格，實際上是兩種基本所有格的結合。

之所以不是「a friend of my」，是因為如果這是正確的表達，那麼它的中文翻譯應為「我的的一個朋友」。

第一個『的』來源於of，第二個『的』來源於my。

可見，採用形容詞性物主代詞my會導致『的』的贅餘，而名詞性物主代詞mine就很好地避免了這個問題。

還有一個原因，下文會提到。

再來看這個式子：

my friend＝a friend of mine

通過對這個式子左右兩邊元素異同點的分析，我將從兩個方面解釋雙重所有格存在的意義。

1. 左右兩邊的中心（名）詞都是friend，但其修飾語所處的相對位置不同，左邊是前置（定語）修飾，右邊是後置（定語）修飾；
2. 除去所有格和中心詞部分，右邊多出了不定冠詞a.

意義：

• 根據（1.），雙重所有格能增加英語中所有關係表達的多樣性，使語言表達多樣化，而且由於s所有格的詞性是形容詞，形容詞前置表達所有關係（my friend）,因此後置的雙重所有格為了加以區分，採用名詞性所有格後置表達所有關係（a friend of mine），這也是雙重所有格不採用形容詞性物主代詞（my）的另一個原因。
• 根據（2.），我們可以看出，由於物主代詞不能與不定冠詞a一起前置來修飾名詞，當想在表達所有關係時使用冠詞時，則必須用雙重所有格。

以上兩個意義，後者是核心意義。

如果沒有雙重所有格，我們很難表達『我的一個朋友』。既不能說「a my friend」，也不能說「my a friend」。

是不是看起來怪怪的？因為物主代詞不可與a, an, this, that, these, those, each, every, any, some, either, neither, no, another, several, enough, much, many, more, most等詞一起前置。

而用「a friend of mine」，原來不能前置使用的限定詞（如a），就能夠前置了。

最後解釋為什麼不用me。

舉一個例子，你就明白了。

a photo of Marys 瑪麗收藏（所有）的一張照片

a photo of Mary 瑪麗本人的照片（照片上是其本人）

上述例子顯示了雙重所有格（上）和of所有格（下）使用時的區別。

（下）例中的Mary是賓格，和題主問題中的me一樣，同為賓格。

感謝 @王家小微 的回答，經過一段時間的深入思考，修正並補充了自己的觀點：

1. 『a friend of me』在語法上應被視作正確，用人稱代詞賓格表示「我」與「朋友」的關係，不屬於雙重所有格，屬於基本所有格當中的of所有格，「of me 為介賓結構」。類似的例句表達還有"You are not the boss of me." （此例句由 @王家小微 提供）
2. a friend of mine=a friend of my friends=one of my friends，用名詞性物主代詞表示集合{我的所有朋友}與「朋友」的∈（one of）關係，屬於雙重所有格。
3. 「a portrait of me」不能作為「a friend of me」成立的論據。前者是對中心詞（畫像）內容的解釋說明；而後者意在解釋中心詞與me的關係，且中心詞與me屬於同一類（都屬於人）。兩短語側重點不同，研究的不是同一範疇的問題。（感謝 @hzqd的回答 ）

個人建議：

即使of後接賓格代替雙重所有格的用法（其實是一個variant，並且只能用於表達人物間的關係）是合法的，仍然不推薦這麼做。原因是存在「a photo of Mary」「a portrait of me」這類短語，形式上的相似易造成客觀上的歧義。

第二次更新：

重新查閱了相關中外語法書後，證實了第一次更新時的存疑（存疑合理性證明詳見評論區），但我認為根據圖1，表達側重點的不同使得『a friend of me』被可能地合理化。

我修正了自己原先的想法，即將名詞和代詞的界限劃得過於清楚，最終不免陷入形式主義的泥潭;而事實上，能僅僅因為me是代詞，father是名詞，就將二者界定為毫無交集甚至對立的兩類詞嗎？顯然是不合適的。（ @秦十一非得很的觀點：A pronoun has been theorized to be a word that substitutes for a noun or noun phrase.）

所以， @hzqd 回答中『隱式名詞賓格』的情境應用於人稱代詞，有一定的合理性。

因此我的最終觀點是：

『a friend of me』的正確性和存在意義應當被接受，與『a friend of mine』表達不同的內涵。

a friend of mine 解釋這個短語的很多，就不多說了，眾多朋友中的一個。

a friend of me 也不是錯誤的表達，側重表達兩個人之間的關係，不是陌生人，不是敵人，而是我的「朋友」。

因為沒有給出更具體的語境，怎麼解釋都行。

語法我已經基本忘記的差不多了。從實用主義的角度來說：

1. of mine是雙重所有格，百度都可以查到。
2. 不可以換成me。因為英語裏沒有這麼用的。

我感覺這個提問，有點像老外問中國人，你們為啥說「兩個人」不說「二個人」？

另外，單獨說一下「語法」和「語言」的關係。

「語言」是先於「語法」存在的，而且「語法」是歸納性的。因此，試圖為所有語言現象都找到合理的語法解釋，是行不通的。這時候多搜索語料庫，知道外國人到底怎麼說的就足夠了。

有些表達就是語言習慣。He is my friend 這麼簡潔，為什麼還要費勁說He is a friend of me？

樓上很多人用語法規則來說明friend of me語法不正確，或者friend of mine語法上的合理性，但是我看到在英語母語者對這個問題的討論完全是另一回事：friend of me纔是語法正確的，但英語不習慣這麼用， 英語裏習慣用of me用來表達其他含義，都是習慣問題，而不是語法上對或錯。

語言是自然產生並演變的，不是人造的，不是上帝根據一個語法規則體系創造出來給人用的，所以看看職業跟英語語言有關的英語母語者怎麼說：

我們平常習慣說「a friend of mine,」但是我們並不會注意到這裡邊包含了雙重的所有格，Mine表示所有格，of也是所有格，那「friend of mines就成了 三重所有格，為什麼不簡單得用更符合邏輯的「friend of me」?

如果用mine來代替me，那麼也可以用「she is a friend of Georges」 來代替「she is a friend of George.」，多年前我的大學老師教我們，這樣的結構包含了語法上的省略(ellipsis),根據這個原則，完整的表達表示意思就成了 she is a friend among Georges friends，顯然有問題，所以我對這個原則比較懷疑，每當我表達「friend of mine」時就會想起這一點(a friend of mine不合邏輯)。

(黑幫成員在介紹某個人時候會說friend of ours表示自己人，a friend of mine表示外人)

A friend of me是錯誤的，不是語法錯誤,而是英語裏習慣不用「of me」來表達「of mine」。「of me」常被用來表達「你的一部分」「你身體的一部分」，比如「She tore my heart out of me.」，或者演員/美國總統里根的一句著名臺詞：「Wheres the rest of me?」 後來他用這句話作為自己自傳的書名

「A friend of me」 is not correct. It』s not wrong grammatically. Its just that the use 「of me」 to mean 「of mine」 isn』t used in English.

A side note: The phrase 「of me」 can be used to mean a part of you, a part of your body. As in 「She tore my heart out of me.」 Or the famous line spoken by Ronald Reagan: 「Where』s the rest of me?」 He later used that as the title of his autobiography.

有兩種方法描述物體的從屬關係(以蘋果為例)：

1. 「The apple belongs to me」
2. 「The apple is mine」

兩個句子都表示同一個意思，但第2個更常用，至少我作為英語母語者在日常聽到的是這樣的。如果你要用me，就應該重組這個句子，但是對這個例子的話，表達就會很奇怪：This friend belongs to me」

The correct sentence is 「This is a friend of mine」. Mine and me are both first person singular pronouns, but mine shows possession. Because the friend is yours, or belongs to you (so to speak), mine is the correct pronoun to use.

There are two ways to show possession of an object (in this example, of an apple):「The apple belongs to me」「The apple is mine」These sentences both mean the same thing, but the one more commonly used, or at least that Ive heard in common speech, is the second example. Normally, if you were to use the pronoun me, you would have to restructure the sentence. However, in this example, it would be a little odd to say 「This friend belongs to me」, but in other cases you could use both sentences interchangeably with a bit of rearrangement.

We do say 「a friend of mine,」 but we do not often notice that it is already a double possessive (genitive) case. (「Mine」 is possessive, and 「of」 is possessive.) So 「friend of mine』s」 would be a triple possessive! Why don』t we simply say 「friend of me」? 再看一段小對話（引自 P. A. Erades 的 English Studies）：

B： A friend of your fathers. 你父親的一個朋友（側重 『』一個朋友『』）

A： If he says such things，he is not a friend of my father，whoever he may be.如果他說出這樣的話來，那，他就不配做我父親的朋友（側重 『』父親『』），不管他是誰。

還有：

a photo of mine 我的一張照片，側重『』一張照片『』，意味著 『』不只一張『』

a photo of me 我的照片，側重 『』我『』，意味著 『』不是別人『』

有一次課後：我看到五六個同學圍在一個女學生的桌旁看照片，一個同學告訴我說是她姐姐的幾張照片。我很感興趣，也想逗逗她，於是，我從中拿出一張：

我問：Is this a photo of yours?

她答：Yes，its a photo of me.

我說不對。旁邊的同學們問我為什麼。

我說：她應該回答：Its a photo of mine（= my photos）才對，因為，這張不是她本人照的照片，而是她姐姐的幾張放在她這裡的照片之一。
