很多時候英語俚語多存在於英語本土國家，為了方便或者表達特殊意思和情感色彩的口頭性很強的短語或者句式。這樣的英語俚語多半意義經過特殊處理或者應用的延伸的意思。俚語是指民間非正式、較口語的語句，是百姓在日常生活中總結出來的通俗易懂順口的具有地方色彩的詞語。

1、a big fish in a small pond 小地方的大人物

In her hometown, she was a big fish in a small pond，but after she moved to New York, she was just only one among many millions. 在她家鄉，她很了不起。可是搬到紐約後，她就不過是芸芸眾生之一了。

2、smoke like a chimney 煙癮很大

smoke在此指「冒煙」；chimney指「煙囪」。smoke like a chimney本意為「像煙囪那樣冒煙」，喻意為「煙癮很大」。想想看，一個煙鬼從來煙不離手，整天吞雲吐霧，不就像那冒煙的煙囪嗎？

She can』t bear her husband for he smokes like a chimney. 她受不了她老公，因為他煙癮太大。

3、bury the hatchet 本意 ：to forgive someone and become friends again 捐棄前嫌（重歸於好）

ditch指「溝渠」，ditchwater指「陰溝里的水」。as dull as ditchwater本意為「像陰溝里的水那樣無味」，喻意為「索然無味，無聊透頂」。ditchwater也可換成dishwater(洗碗水)。

He is knowledgeable, but his teaching style is as dull as ditchwater. 他學識淵博，但他講課的方式無聊透頂。

6、have your cake and eat it too 兩者兼得，或者魚和熊掌兼得

本意 ： to enjoy the advantages of something without its disadvantages; to have both things that are available 得其利而無其弊；兩者兼得

Rick thinks he can stay out late every night and still get good grades—he wants to have his cake and eat it too. 里克以為他既可以每晚在外面逍遙到很晚，又可以得高分——他想魚與熊掌兼得。

7、to be the most surprising, annoying, etc. thing that has happened or that someone has done 極其驚人；甚為討厭

Hes made some silly mistakes in the past, but this one really takes the cake. 他過去曾犯過些愚蠢的錯誤，但是這次最甚。

8、jump the gun ，本意; to do something or start something too soon 過早行動；搶跑

Dont jump the gun on this—make sure you get permission first. 這件事不要操之過急，一定要先得到許可。

9、no-brainer

a project, problem, question, etc. that is very easy to finish or solve 無需動腦的事；輕而易舉的事；容易解決的問題

The issue of whether to build a new stadium is a real no-brainer for most fans. 對於大多數球迷來說，是否建新體育館這個問題無需費腦筋。

10、off the record

本意 ：if you tell someone something off the record, it is not yet official and you do not want it to be repeated publicly （某人的話）非正式的，不得公開的

She told me off the record that the school was going to be close. 她私下裡告訴我說那家學校要倒閉了。

11、take a rain check (on sth)

to refuse an invitation or offer, but say that you might accept it later （婉拒邀請或提議）改日再說，下次吧
