國務卿龐培歐23日才宣佈下週訪北韓，總統川普24日卻表示，他已取消龐培歐赴北韓計畫，考量美國在朝鮮半島無核化目標的進程過於緩慢，以及美中貿易爭端未解。

川普24日透過推特發文指出，已要求龐培歐不要在此時前往北韓，因為美國在朝鮮半島無核化方面的進展不足。

…Additionally, because of our much tougher Trading stance with China, I do not believe they are helping with the process of denuclearization as they once were (despite the UN Sanctions which are in place)…

川普並說，此外，由於美方對中國貿易的立場更為強硬，他認為中方不像以前一樣，幫助實現無核化進程。

川普表示，龐培歐期待在不久後訪問北韓，很可能是在解決美中貿易關係問題之後。

川普還透過推特向北韓領導人金正恩致以誠摯問候，並表示期待很快見到金正恩。

中國大陸商務部常務副部長兼國際貿易談判副代表王受文，22日至23日率團訪美，與美國財政部主管國際事務的次長馬爾帕斯（David Malpass）率領的美方代表團，就雙方各自關注的中美經貿問題進行磋商。

川普24日的推文顯示，雙方這次談判並未解決美中貿易問題。

龐培歐23日纔在國務院宣佈，由福特汽車跨國政府事務副總裁畢甘（Stephen Biegun）出任北韓政策特別代表；畢甘將主導美國對北韓的政策，實現總統川普的目標，即北韓達成最終、充分驗證的去核化。

龐培歐並說，他將與畢甘於下週訪問北韓，推動外交進程以達成目標。
