afternoon thunderstorms 午后雷阵雨	Last week we had a massive power failure during a freak afternoon thunderstorm. 上星期在反常的午后雷雨过程中， 我们遇上大规模停电。
typhoon warnings 台风警报	All public typhoon warnings were lifted yesterday afternoon. 昨天下午已解除全部的台风警报。
classes work is canceled 停止上班上课	In Taipei, classes or work is canceled; in Kaohsiung, classes are canceled while work isn’t. 台北区停止上班上课，高雄区要上班不上课。
classes are canceled while work isn’t. 要上班不上课
take appropriate measures 采取适当措施	Take appropriate measures to avoid possible damage or loss of life due to flooding. 应做好预防措施，以防因淹水导致的人命及财物损失。

1.hit by the typhoon 遭受台风侵袭

Ex: Taiwan is often hit by typhoons in summer, especially in July and August. 台湾在夏天, 特别是七月和八月常会受台风的侵袭。

 

hit 在这里为动词 (hit-hit-hit)，表示「侵袭」

 

2.eye of the storm 台风眼

Ex: The eye of the storm is currently some 410 kilometers east-southeast of Hualien,and is moving at some 22 kilometers per hour in a northerly direction. 台风距离花莲东南方约410公里，而且以每小时22公里的速度朝北移动。

 

台风的中心位置以台风眼为准，而台风眼是 the eye of the storm

句中的两个 some 不是「一些」，some 放在数字之前要解释为「大约」

英文里要说「方位」时，要用「 to the 方位 + of + 地名」的方式

而此句中的 east-southeast 是「东南东」方向

另外朝向东、西、南、北方向前进可用

in a easterly, westerly, southerly, northerly direction.

 

 

3.be V.+approaching 正在逼近

Ex: Typhoon Nepartak is approaching Taiwan and will arrive this week.

尼伯特台风逼近台湾，预计这周登陆。

 

approach 这个字可以当动词和名词，有接近和靠近的意思

 

4.in effect = effective 生效

Ex: Land and sea warnings are now in effect. 陆上及海上警报即刻生效。

 

动词的 warn 是「警告」，而名词的 warning 可作「警告、告诫」或「警报」

 

effect 是「效果、效力、影响」

而片语 in effect 是「生效、在实行中」之意

但是考试中常用的是它的形容词 effective「有效的」

 

5.call off 取消

Ex: With the storm, all of northern and central Taiwan has called off school and work. 随著台风到来，北中台所有地区今日停止上班上课。

 

call 是我们熟知的打电话，但是动词片语 call off 却是取消、停止进行的意思

call off school and work 停止学校与工作场所的活动，就是指「停止上班上课」另外维持上班上课则是 Schools and offices remain open.  

 

6.cause severe damage 造成严重的损害

Ex: The strong winds and heavy rains blew down trees and caused severe damage to the crops. Luckily, it didn't cause any disaster. 强风及豪雨吹倒树并且对农作物造成严重的损害。但幸运的，它没有造成任何的灾害。

 

heavy rains、torrential rains 同样都是豪雨的意思

另外对......造成极大损害除了用 cause great damage to

可以说 do a lot of damage to......

而对….造成威胁则可以用 pose a threat to

 

Ex: The intensity of Chan-Hom will continue to increase and pose a threat to the island. 台风强度将持续增加，对本岛造成威胁。

 

intensity 指台风的强度，也可用来指思想、情感、活动等的强烈

 

7.pack 挟带

Ex: The typhoon is packing sustained winds of 200 kilometers per hour, with gusts of up to 227. 台风伴随著每小时200公里、瞬间阵风时速达227公里的持续强风。

 

pack 当名词是「包裹、背包」之意，例如「背包客」就是backpacker

但它也可当动词，有「装入包裹、装（箱）」及「挟带、伴随」之意

sustain 原是「支撑、维持」，在此为过去分词当形容词使用，指「持续的」

gust 原是指「一阵强风」或「一阵突发」

在台风报导里即为主播口中的「最大瞬间阵风」

 

8.liftthe warning 解除

The CWB will lift the warning for the typhoon after determining that Nepartak’s radius will not cover Taiwan. 中央气象局确认尼伯特台风不再笼罩本岛，将会解除台风警报。

 

lift 原本是「举起」或「抬起」的意思，在这边是指「解除…禁令」

比如说解除发禁 lift the hair ban

Radius 是指台风半径范围，cover 就是覆盖
