HBO Asia has ordered an original sci-fi drama set in Taiwan and slated to air next year.

Dream Raider (8×60’) is the 16th Asian commission from HBO since it set up its originals production in 2012 and is scheduled to air on HBO, VoD service HBO GO and HBO On Demand.

Though details of the plot are currently under wraps, the series will be filmed in Taiwan and will be in the Mandarin language.

It will feature an all-star Taiwanese cast, including Vivian Hsu (The Devil Fish), David Wang (Project Gutenberg) and Jason Wang (GATAO 2: The New Leader Rising, Murmur of the Hearts), and is being exec produced by Hong Kong filmmaker Cheang Pou-Soi. Principal photography has already begun.

Following the success of our first Taiwanese drama series, The Teenage Psychic, we are looking forward to once again working with the talented storytellers in Taiwan on a genre that we have never done before,” said HBO Asia CEO Jonathan Spink.

Science fiction is a genre that allows for limitless creativity and I can’t wait for our audience in the region to explore the futuristic realm and unknown possibilities of ‘dream-raiding’ with us.”

Earlier this year, Spink told C21 that HBO Asia was looking to tap into the wealth of stories from the region.

We cover 20-odd territories in quite a big area but we have six or seven key territories – Taiwan, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong and the Philippines are our most important. The majority of our programmes will come from one of those six places, he said at the time. “If you’re really going to play in the game, you’ve got invest in those places.”
